    Stung by a Wasp!

Yesterday, I got stung by a wasp.  :(

Anson came to my rescue with a tube of Afterbite, the stuff you use for mosquito bites, but after applying it for a while, the swelling and pain did not subside, so I checked on the internet to see if Afterbite was a good choice for that.  The answer?  No!
I found out that wasp stings are alkaline, so to neutralize it, you should apply something acidic, like vinegar.
On the other hand, bee stings are acidic, so you should apply something alkaline, like basking soda or ammonia. Afterbite is mainly ammonia, so it would be good for bee stings and not wasp stings.

Hard to remember, right?  There is a little formula to help you:

    Bee = Baking Soda
    VVasp = Vinegar

Of course, if you experience allergic reaction, such as shortness of breath, dizziness, fever, etc., get emergency medical attention!

I shared this information in my radio show on A1 Chinese Radio (AM 1540) today, and an audience asked how do we distinguish wasps and a bees.  Here's a nice photo of each: hope it helps!

A wasp (note the smooth 'skin')

Selling My Old iPhone - Buy My Tronics

Are you going to get the new 3G iPhone?  I am planning to - the white 16G one.  What to do with my old iPhone?  Sell it!

You can canvass your friends, highlighting the fact that if they get your old iPhone, they can keep whatever voice plan they are using - no need to shell out $30 more for the data plan.  Or you can tell people you are selling on your blog (*wink *wink).  Or, you can go to this website www.buymytronics.com, answer a few questions about the general condition of your iPhone or other gadgets, get a quote, mail it off and get the money.  No hassles!
     Iphone
I checked the price for my 8G baby, and it will pay me $192.03 US if I sell it to them right now, on the morning of the much anticipated launch date of the new iPhone.  Not bad, since I plan to sell it to my colleague at $199!

(I am sorry, Steve, for answering your question so late.  Hope this helps.)

    Asylum for the Verbally Insane

We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes,
But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes.
One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice,
Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?
If I speak of my foot and show you my feet,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
Why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth?

Then one may be that, and three would be those,
Yet hat in the plural would never be hose,
And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.
We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren.
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
But imagine the feminine: she, shis and shim!

Let's face it - English is a crazy language.
    There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger;
neither apple nor pine in pineapple.
English muffins weren't invented in England.
We take English for granted, but if we explore its
paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham?
Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but
    not one amend.
If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of
all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught?
If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a
    humanitarian eat?
Sometimes I think all the folks who grew up speaking
English should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.

In what other language do people
recite at a play and play at a recital?
We ship by truck but send cargo by ship.
We have noses that run and feet that smell.
We park in a driveway and drive in a parkway.
And how can a slim chance and a fat chance be the
same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a
language in which your house can burn up as it burns down,
in which you fill in a form by filling it out,
and in which an alarm goes off by going on.

And, in closing, if Father is Pop,
    how come Mother's not Mop?

    I give up !

    Spider webs!

I just realizes I haven't tended my website for a long time.  Been busy lately... playing Pet Pupz on Facebook.
Anson asks why I would want to spend so much time playing with an e-dog that doesn't move or do stuff, when two real dogs are relishing my attention all the time.
    Um... I don't know...

    Please Give Generously!

The day is almost over.  At least the work day.

After we decided to go ahead and do a telethon to raise funds for the victims of the Earthquake, my emotions went on a roller coaster ride.  On the one hand, I feel a certain 'high', knowing there's a lot of work to be done, and it's meaning ful work.  On the other hand, the more I talk about, think about and read about the victims, the sadder I felt.

I came across a story on Commercial Radio Hong Kong about the first hand experience of a volunteer who was stranded in Sichuan.  I couldn't help but cry.  Before I went into the studio to do my own radio show, I was listening to the song 'It Will Be Better Tomorrow', tears welled up in my eyes again, and I was so worried that I couldn't control myself when I go on air.

As of this moment, we have raised over $35,000.  Hopefully, we could reach $50,000.  With the dollar for dollar matching from the government, that would make $100,000.  If you are reading this blog, please help!  Call 1-800-268-2776 and make a donation now, even if our telethon is over!

    To K.A.T.H.Y.

    Kathy,

Thank you for your message.  Yes, I try to be happy as best as I can.  I believe that happiness doesn't just fall from the sky.  You have to work towards it.  How?  By learning to appreciate the small things!  I have gone through difficult times, just like anyone else, but I always try to make myself find things that I can be happy about.  Think positive thoughts.  Smile at strangers and see if they smile back at you.  It's really not that hard.

    Cheers,
    Leslie

Lemon Yogurt Cake with Lemon Glaze

Lately I am into taking a tablespoonful of organic yogurt each morning.  Supposedly, the probiotic benefits will make my skin smoother and my digestive system stronger.  The book 'French Women Don't Get Fat' touts yogurt as the ultimate French secret.  Is it really?  We will see.

Plain yogurt taste a little sharp, but you'll get used to it.  If you can't, try it with a teaspoon of honey or jam.  It will definitely be better than the sugared version in your supermarket fridge.  Diana's Seafood at Warden and Lawrence sells home made concentrated organic yogurt made bythe mother of Chris the owner.  Many health food sections also sell organiz non-sweetened yogurt.  The Quebec company Liberte also makes very nice yogurts.  I think these are best for eating as is.

For this cake recipe, I won't get so fussy, since I think that the baking would overwrite any priotic benefits.  The resulting cake is rich and moist, like a pound cake, but even more aromatic - perfect for breakfast on the run!

    INGREDIENTS

    3) Sift the 2 3/4 cups flour, baking soda and salt into a mixing bowl.  Set aside.  Mix yogurt, lemon zest and lemon juice in a separate bowl.  Set aside.
    4) In a separate borl, combine butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
    5) While beating, add eggs, one at a time.
    6) Alternately beat in dry flour mixture and yogurt mixture.
    7) Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until a toothpick inserted to the thickest part of the cake comes out clean.

While the cake is cooling in the pan, make the Lemon Glaze and glaze the cake while it is still warm.

    Be Not Afraid

A few days ago, I had a vivid dream about myself saving someone from drowning in a pool.  Throughout that dream, I was singing a song.  The song has stuck and I've been singing it for days now.  It is called 'Be Not Afraid', and it is a hymn we used to sing at Good News Singer, a guitar choir for St. Teresa's Church.  It has a beautiful melody, and we would do it in 4 vocal parts.  Church goers would sometimes drop by and comment how beautiful this song was.

I found a touching rendition by Daniel O'Donnell on Youtube.  Enjoy.

You shall cross the barren desert,
but you shall not die of thirst.
You shall wander far in safety
though you do not know the way.
You shall speak your words in foreign lands
    and all will understand.
You shall see the face of God and live.

    Refrain:
    Be not afraid.
    I go before you always.
    Come follow me,
and I will give you rest.

If you pass through raging waters
in the sea, you shall not drown.
If you walk amid the burning flames,
    you shall not be harmed.
If you stand before the pow'r of hell
and death is at your side,
know that I am with you through it all.

    Blessed are your poor,
for the kingdom shall be theirs.
Blest are you that weep and mourn,
for one day you shall laugh.
And if wicked men insult and hate you all because of Me,
    blessed, blessed are you!

While I was searching, I also found another song we used to sing at St. Teresa's.  It is called 'On Eagle's Wings'.

    Reply to Athena

    Athena,

Thank you for your message.  Due to your 'communications setting', I couldn't reply you privately.
Please give fairchild TV a call the information you want.  They have the complete contact info.  I only know that the restaurant is at Leslie and 16th Street, and the Dr's name is Dr. Pun.  His book's name is Metabolic Diet, but it is not available at general bookstores.  Fairchild's number is 905-889-8090.  If the receptionist can't help you, please ask to speak to the Leisure Talk producer.

Thanks and have a nice weekend,

    Leslie

    Hi Leslie,

In your recent episode about health eating/recipes, you have introduced a book written by the doctor interviewed.  Could you give me details of the book and the name of the restaurant? I am very interested in the book that you talked about.

Thanks and have a great day!

The Story of the Human Camera - Stephen Wiltshire

Stephen Wiltshire was born in London to West Indian parents on 24th April, 1974. His mother, Geneva Wiltshire had come from St Lucia and his father, Colvin, from Barbados. Colvin was killed in a motorcycle accident when Stephen was three years of age. His sister, Annette, is two years older than her brother. He lives with his mother in West London.

As a child, Stephen was mute and did not relate to other human beings. Aged three, he was diagnosed as autistic. He had no language, uncontrolled tantrums and lived entirely in his own world.

At the age of five, Stephen was sent to Queensmill School in London, a school for children with special needs, where it was noticed that the only pastime he enjoyed was drawing. It soon became apparent he communicated with the world through the language of drawing; first animals, then London buses, and finally buildings. These drawings show a masterful perspective, a whimsical line and reveal a natural innate artistry.

Aged eight, Stephen started drawing cityscapes after the effects of an earthquake (all imaginary) as a result of being shown photographs of earthquakes in a book at school. He also became obsessed with cars and illustrations of cars at this time (his knowledge of them is encyclopaedic) and he drew most of the major London landmarks.

The teachers at Queensmill School encouraged him to speak by temporarily taking away his art supplies so that he would be forced to ask for them. Stephen responded by making sounds and eventually uttered his first word - "paper." He learned to speak fully at the age of nine.

In 1987, the BBC QED programme, 'The Foolish Wise Ones', featured Stephen's astounding talent. The programme was devoted to three autistic savants: musical, mathematical and artistic. Stephen was introduced by Sir Hugh Casson (past president of the Royal Academy), who described him as "the best child artist in Britain". Stephen's work has since been the subject of numerous television programmes around the world, and the writer and psychologist, Oliver Sacks, has devoted an essay to Stephen in his book An Anthropologist On Mars (Picador 1995). Stephen is the only artistic autistic savant in the world whose work has been recorded and published since his childhood. His third book - Floating Cities (Michael Joseph, 1991) - was number one on the Sunday Times bestseller list.

Meanwhile, Stephen's artworks were being exhibited frequently in venues all over the world. In 2001 he appeared in another BBC documentary, Fragments of Genius, for which he was filmed flying over London aboard a helicopter and subsequently completing a detailed and perfectly scaled aerial illustration of a four-square-mile area within three hours; his drawing included 12 historic landmarks and 200 other structures.

In October and November 2003, thousands flocked to the Orleans House gallery in Twickenham near London, England, to see the first major retrospective of Stephen's work. The exhibition covered the 20-year period, from 1983 to 2003, and comprised 150 examples of Stephen's drawings, paintings and prints.

In May 2005 following a short helicopter ride over Tokyo he drew a stunningly detailed panoramic view of the city on a 10-meter-long canvas. Since then he has drawn Rome, Hong Kong, Frankfurt, Madrid and London on giant canvasses.

In January 2006 it was announced that Stephen was being named by Queen Elizabeth II as a Member of the Order of the British Empire, in recognition of his services to the art world. (No specific mention of his disability was made in the citation) Later that year he opened his permanent gallery at the Royal Opera Arcade, London.

Here's another video of Stephen drawing Hong Kong:
